Cal 1 Card Purpose

The Cal 1 Card is your student’s official campus ID. They’ll typically use their Cal 1 Card several times a day while on campus. For example, they’ll need a Cal 1 Card to enter the residence halls, ride free on all campus shuttle buses, vote in ASUC elections, and access meal plans at the Berkeley Dining locations.

Students can also enjoy several other campus benefits via use of the Cal 1 Card.  Some of these benefits include access to sporting events, the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF), discounts in the campus bookstore and Cal Performances, and free admission at the Berkeley Art Museum.

Debit Account

Every student has a debit account, it comes with the Cal 1 Card, and it doesn’t cost you anything!

The Cal 1 Card debit account is an added feature of the Cal 1 Card. By adding money into a Cal 1 Card debit account, cardholders are able to pay for printing services at campus libraries and computing centers, prescriptions and health services fees at the Tang Center, and purchase goods and services at the campus bookstore and over 20 other merchant locations on and off campus.

When you add funds to your student’s debit account, you ensure that the money is used for essentials such as school materials, personal care items, and food (alcohol and tobacco purchases are prohibited). Your student benefits by having a convenient, safe, and cash-free method of making daily transactions. Because every student already has a Cal 1 Card, you do not need to sign up for any extra accounts, and there are no maintenance fees, minimum balances, overdraft penalties, or transaction charges.

Anyone can make a deposit to a Cal 1 Card Debit Account using a UC Berkeley Student ID #. Online deposits can be made using a credit card and are immediately available for use.

Deposits can also be made by mail. Visit Add Money by Mail page for more details.
