Cal 1 Card updates on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

*NOTICE OF TEMPORARY SERVICE RESTRICTIONS AND MODIFIED CARD ISSUANCE PROCESSES*

GENERAL INFORMATION

As part of the University’s evolving effort to limit the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19), campus buildings have been locked and access permissions have been restricted.  Accordingly, in-person support services at the Cal 1 Card office (e.g. issuance of new or replacement cards) are currently available by appointment only Monday – Friday (excluding administrative holidays) from 10AM – 4PM.

A separate campus health and safety mandate requires the use of face coverings at all indoor and outdoor locations. Accordingly, as part of our employment and consistent with the requirements of corresponding city, county, and state orders, Cal 1 Card staff are compelled to deny access and refuse service to anyone that refuses to comply.

GENERAL CARD ISSUANCE REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS, EMPLOYEES, AND AFFILIATES

  • Online Photo Upload
Issuance of the initial Cal 1 Card requires that you upload a compliant photo.  If you have previously been issued a Cal 1 Card, you may either use the prior photo or upload a new one for the replacement Cal 1 Card.  To upload a photo, proceed as follows:

    • Log into your Cal 1 Card account and return to this page after you have done so
    • Visit the online Photo Submission Page
    • Review the compliance requirements
    • Select “Upload Photo” at the bottom of the page
      • If you have a saved photo that is compliant, feel free to upload that file
      • If you do not have such a photo, find a solid white backdrop and take a selfie to upload
  • Government-issued Photo ID For In-person Identity Verification
Issuance of the initial Cal 1 Card requires in-person identity verification of the cardholder via a valid (i.e. non-expired) government-issued photo identification card (e.g. driver license, State ID, passport, military ID).

INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS

  • All students
    • In alignment with applicable campus health and safety directives, students are advised to refrain from making a trip from outside of the Bay Area to the Berkeley campus solely for the purpose of obtaining a new or replacement Cal 1 Card or AC Transit EasyPass Clipper Card.  These cards only have authorized functional value on campus and in the Bay Area.
    • Issuance of a Cal 1 Card (or lack thereof) will not impact your ability to create and use your CalNet credentials (i.e. CalNet ID and Passphrase) for access to UC Berkeley online resources / applications.
    • Your Cal 1 Card photo, student profile information, and enrollment verification confirmation are all available by logging into your CalCentral dashboard using your CalNet credentials.

INFORMATION FOR EMPLOYEES AND AFFILIATES

  • All Employees / Affiliates
    • All employees / affiliates needing new or replacement Cal 1 Card may obtain one as follows:
      • Visit our online Flex Appointment Page to select from available appointment time slots
      • Please remember to call 510-643-6839 when you have arrived at Sproul Hall for your appointment
    • Employees and affiliates are advised not to make an unnecessary trip to the Berkeley campus solely for the purpose of obtaining a new or replacement Cal 1 Card, unless explicitly prompted to do so by your manager or a departmental representative because your position requires your “essential” presence on campus.
    • Issuance of a Cal 1 Card (or lack thereof) will not impact your ability to create and use your CalNet credentials (i.e. CalNet ID and Passphrase) for access to UC Berkeley online resources / applications.
  • Employees and Affiliates With Obsolete Cards
Due to a recent upgrade of the campus access control system, Cal 1 Cards with an issue date prior to February 2007 have been found to have obsolete technology that is incompatible with the new software.  We are prioritizing the replacement of obsolete cards for employees / affiliates with an “essential” designation.  Employees without an “essential designation” should not have an urgent need for a replacement card.  Additionally, employees who do not use their Cal 1 Cards to open doors on campus also do not need to replace these cards. Cardholders with an “essential” designation needing to replace an obsolete card may do so as follows:

    • visit our online Flex Appointment Page to select from available appointment time slots
    • Please remember to call 510-643-6839 when you have arrived at Sproul Hall for your appointment

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and patience as we endeavor to provide the best service in these trying and uncertain times!
