Card Policies

The Cal 1 Card is the property of the University of California - Berkeley, and it must be surrendered upon request. Students must carry their Cal 1 Card at all times for proper identification.

The Cal 1 Card system was developed with the purpose of providing you with a medium to gain access to services, benefits and secured facilities on campus. The program is not an originator of data especially account numbers. All account numbers for students must be provided by the registrar's office via BearFacts. Each cardholder must help maintain the integrity of the system by immediately reporting lost cards/stolen to the RSSP-IT Helpdesk (510-642-7700).

Students registered for the current semester are eligible for a Cal 1 Card.

  • No hats, sunglasses, or other objects will be allowed in your picture.
  • This is your official university ID card.
  • Customers are only entitled to one active card.

Replacement Fee

Your first Cal 1 Card is provided free of charge. If you lose your card, you will be charged a $25.00 non-refundable replacement fee.

Lost and Found Cards

If you find a lost ID card, please return it to our office or drop it in a US Mailbox. If you lose your ID card, please report it lost by logging into your account, or phone 1-866-2UCBCARD.

Card Abuse

You are responsible for the use of your ID Card. Don't lend your card to others. Unauthorized use or use by a party other than the person identified on the ID, as well as tampering or alteration, will warrant confiscation and possible disciplinary action by the University.

Change of Name

If you change your name while you are a student at Cal, you must file a "Petition of Name Change" so your records reflect the name change. The form is available in 120 Sproul Hall. Please wait five business days after the petition has been filed before coming to the Cal 1 Card Office to obtain a new ID card free of charge.

Absences and Withdrawal

Your identification card must be retained for three years from last attendance at the University; if re-instated during this period the ID remains valid. The current replacement fee will be assessed if the card is not retained. It will be valid for any term a student is enrolled at the University.

Digitally Stored Images

When Cal 1 Cards are issued the cardholder's photo and signature are stored in the ID card database. The University protects personal identification information as private data. It will not be released outside the University (except in response to a subpoena or other legal processes; in which case, you will be informed, in advance if possible, such a request has been made). It will not be released within UC Berkeley in digital form without the permission of the Registrar who may authorize limited and controlled use for academic purposes.

It will be distributed in hard copy format to the Academic Department in which you are enrolled during your upper-class and graduate years and to faculty teaching subjects you are registered for.

Cardholders may request that a copy of their image file be sent to them via email. Request must be made in person at the Cal 1 Card office. A $5.00 processing fee is payable at the Housing Cashiers office, 2610 Channing Way. You MUST show proof of payment before your image can be emailed to you.

Caring for Your ID Card

To ensure the durability of your card, please refrain from:

  • using the card in any fashion which may damage it;
  • punching holes in the card (don't allow anyone else, including campus departments, to do so either). Your card has an antenna built into it for access to buildings and other services and punching a hole into the card will result in you being denied access to buildings and some services;
  • placing the card on stereo equipment, computers or near any magnetic fields;
  • placing the card in your pocket with coins, this will damage the magnetic stripe.
